Why do Americans pronounce the word "colonel" as if there was an r in it?. Despite having no ‘r’ in the word, in English, it is pronounced just like ‘kernel’. Here, the first ‘l’ was changed to ‘r.’

The word 'Colonel' comes from 'column', as in the commander of a military column. The Spanish equivalent however, was coronel, as in an officer of the Crown or Corona.

This was because the rank was bestowed upon the commander of a column of troops. This word was then adopted by the French, who translated the term in their own language, converted the word ‘colonnello’ to the word ‘coronel’. This is the reason why ‘colonel’ is pronounced ‘kernel’.

A It’s a messy story, the result of a confusion between two forms of the word that came into English at different times. Knife.

Why is colonel pronounced kernel

Colonel pronounced /ˈkɜː.nəl/ (AE: /ˈkɝː.nəl/) is a case of Dissimilation of /l..l/ to /r..l/. The opposite process of the above happened with the Latin word peregrinus (pilgrim), when the first r was changed to an l. It's a case of Dissimilation of /r..r/ to /l..r/. (Now it’s peregrino in Spanish and Pellegrino in Italian.

This seems odd, but there is an explanation.
